This music came together fast!! In early 2026, legendary Chicago trumpet legend BRAD GOODE told me he was coming to Nashville for some work and casually said we should record some music together. I quickly agreed! That set the wheels in motion and here we are. I wrote some music specifically for this project and pulled out a couple others I had in the wings from the last couple years. Brad also provided a few tunes for the session.
My first call was to one of my very favorites drummers, DERREK PHILLIPS, as I have been using his drum loop package to compose with for some time and it was in the cards that we had to do a project together. What a pocket and what a vibe! He lifts every bandstand he’s a part of. Check out that tambourine playing!!
On the low end of the groove is bassist JON ESTES. He has also long been a favorite of mine (don’t tell him i said so!). The first time I heard him, I knew he was special. It wasn’t because of his prodigious technique or the fact that we (Bela Fleck & the Flecktones) had him, while he was still in high school, waiting in the wings for a gig Victor Wooten might not make due to Vic’s wife being in labor! I knew Jon was special because of his personal sound. He has always had his own thing going on. He has deeply studied the pantheon of bassists and he has an original voice. He knows what to play and when to play it and that the groove is paramount!
Last, but certainly not least, is keyboardist JON COWHERD. He is a musician’s musician. I don’t think he’s capable of playing a bad note! His intuition is remarkable as are his feel and empathy with the musical situation and for the people he’s playing with. As co-leader of the Fellowship Band with Brian Blade, he’s acknowledgement and respect as a one-of-a-kind musician have been long accepted.
I’m thrilled with this project and I can’t wait for the world to hear it! Thanks to these incredible musicians for their brilliance, artistry, and light. - Jeff

Jeff and I met 15 years ago, when I sat-in with a big band while visiting Nashville. He and his wife Ryoko warmly invited me to dinner that moment. This began our friendship and the many hours of musical adventure that have accompanied it. Everything he does is imbued with a creative spirit and an enthusiasm that is infectious. We have the best time just hanging out, talking about life and music. When we play together, the dialogue is open, and the boundaries seem to be blurred, or maybe even to vanish. We’ve talked about recording together for a while, now. I’m so happy that we finally did this and am even more excited by the result. I trusted Jeff implicitly to choose the other musicians. When I heard them interpreting our music for the first time I knew he had called the very best people for the job. In listening, it seems that the music reflects the joy that we experienced in putting it together. I hope that you will feel some of this when you hear it! – Brad
